The Dos And Don'ts Of Changing Your Push Mower's Oil

Posted on: 5 June 2015

If you own a push mower, then you'll have to learn how to change the oil on it in order to keep it running reliably and efficiently for many years to come. After all, your mower's engine relies on lubrication from clean oil to run properly. Changing your own mower's oil is easier than you might think, especially once you get the hang of it, but there are a few things you should know before you get started.

DO Disconnect Your Spark Plug

While it's unlikely that you're going to accidentally start up your push mower while you're working on it, it's always better to be safe than sorry when operating machinery with sharp blades. Therefore, before you begin the process of changing your mower's motor oil, it's imperative that you disconnect its spark plug wire; to be extra safe, consider covering the wire with electrical tape as well. This will eliminate the possibility that your mower could start while you're working on it.

DO Drain Into an Approved Container

If this is your first time changing oil, whether it be on your mower or on your own car, you'll probably need to head out to purchase an approved container for draining the used oil into. Typically, you can find these cheap at your local auto supply store or even a home improvement store. Never pour used oil into a container that's not designated for oil, and always set a drain pan down underneath your mower before you get started. You don't want an oil stain on your garage floor or driveway, as it can be very difficult to remove.

DON'T Forget to Change the Filter

Each time you change your mower's oil, it's a good idea to change the oil filter as well. All you need to do is remove the existing filter using a screwdriver or wrench, clean the sealing gasket with new motor oil, and screw a new filter back into place. Changing the oil filter on your mower every time you complete an oil change will help you get the most of each oil change and prolong the life of your push mower's engine in the process.

By following the tips above, you'll be able to easily change your lawnmower's oil whenever it needs it. This can prolong the mower's life and prevent costly repairs. If you need oil for your machinery, visit Bradenton Fuel Oil.
